AI Start-Ups in Germany

The study identifies a significant increase in AI startups in 2023, most of which are located in Berlin and Bavaria.

The appliedAI Institute for Europe has analysed the artificial intelligence startup scene in Germany in its sixth annual German AI Startup Landscape 2023.

In 2023, there were 508 AI startups in Germany, an increase of 67% compared to the previous year. A total of 246 new AI startups were included in the report, while 262 of the 304 AI startups from 2022 remained on the list. 42 AI start-ups were no longer included in the report, for example due to buyouts or liquidation. The comparatively strong increase in AI start-ups is partly due to an adjustment in the methodology.

Looking at the location of the AI start-ups, 32.5% are located in Berlin, followed by Bavaria (24.6%) and Baden-Württemberg (9.6%). In terms of the number of AI start-ups per capita, Berlin continues to lead, followed by Hamburg, Bavaria and Hesse. Saxony-Anhalt brings up the rear.

Around half of the AI start-ups have received a significant amount of funding. The average funding amount for the financed AI startups is USD 14.8 million, while the median is USD 5.4 million. Financing increases with the age of the startups.
