AI: Key Technology for the German Economy

AI knowledge is particularly in demand in the German economy. Different knowledge is prioritized depending on the region.

The study by the German Economic Institute examines the importance of knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI). To this end, 16,387 AI job advertisements in Germany were analysed in the first quarter of 2023.

The study makes it clear that AI is an essential key technology for the economy and society, with a wide range of areas of application. According to the analysis, 72% of companies are looking for people with AI skills to be able to analyse large volumes of company data automatically and autonomously. 29% of companies are looking for employees with AI skills to optimise their own services or internal processes with the help of AI or to advise customers on AI issues. Significantly fewer (13%) of the job advertisements relate to research in the field of AI, 12% to the use of AI in robotics and 11% to AI in the context of driver assistance systems. AI skills for use in image and speech processing are again sought somewhat less frequently at 7% and 6% respectively.

There are also specifics for different regions. In Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, for example, people are increasingly looking for AI skills in the field of driver assistance, while in Bremen the focus is on AI robotics. In the city states of Berlin and Hamburg, jobs in the fields of business intelligence and big data as well as consulting are particularly well represented. In Berlin, there is also a demand for AI experts in speech and image processing. The importance of rapid legal certainty in the field of AI and the expansion of computing and broadband infrastructure in Germany is particularly emphasised in the study. These measures could help to further promote the use of AI in companies and utilise the potential of AI to a greater extent in the German economy.
