Computer Science Lessons Advocated as a Compulsory Subject

A majority of parents see mandatory computer science classes as good preparation for their children's working life.

In order to prepare young people for the modern labour market, an adequate school education requires the teaching of digital skills in addition to traditional basic skills. A large majority of 83% of parents and 74% of all respondents are therefore in favour of the introduction of computer science as a compulsory subject in schools from the 5th grade onwards. This is the result of a representative survey conducted by the digital association Bitkom among 1,007 people aged 16 and over, including 215 parents of school-age children.

Almost two thirds of respondents (65%) believe that programming skills help to prepare pupils well for the world of work. A large majority (93%) of respondents also call for the use of digital technologies and media to become standard in all schools. Only 3% of respondents are against the use of digital technologies in school lessons.
