Communication via Messenger Services Has Risen Sharply

The use of messenger services continues to increase in both private and professional contexts.

A representative survey by the digital association Bitkom analyses the use of messenger services such as WhatsApp and Telegram in Germany. For this purpose, 1,005 people aged 16 and over were asked about the average number of short messages they receive per day.

With an average of 19 short messages received per day and per person, the total number of short messages sent daily in Germany exceeded one billion for the first time. This represents an increase of 46% compared to the last survey in 2021. This increase in communication via messenger services can be observed in both private and professional contexts. The use of messenger services for internal and external communication is now a matter of course in many companies.

However, there are major differences between the various age groups. For example, every second person in the 16 to 29 age group receives an average of more than 20 text messages per day, while only 36% of the 30 to 49 age group and just 23% of the over 65s do so.
