The representative study by digital association Bitkom analyses awareness of technical innovations such as ChatGPT, Metaverse and blockchain. To this end, 1,002 people in Germany aged 16 and over were surveyed.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is familiar to 92% of respondents, compared to only 86% in the previous year. However, only 56% of respondents were confident enough to explain the term. The increase in awareness is attributed to services such as ChatGPT. As these applications also make AI accessible to consumers without any special prior knowledge.
In addition to awareness of AI, awareness of the terms metaverse and blockchain has also increased: while 75% of respondents had never heard of the metaverse in the previous year, only 39% had in the current survey. 38% of respondents were unable to categorise the term blockchain, compared to 53% in 2022. 81% of respondents were familiar with the term app and would be able to explain it. The same applies to the terms cookies (73%), cyber attacks (72%) and 5G (69%). Nevertheless, despite the increased familiarity with some terms, other technical innovations remain unknown. For example, 44% and 30% of respondents state that they have heard the terms cryptocurrency and virtual reality, but are unable to explain what they mean.
