Great Desire for More Digital Administrative Services

The majority of citizens have little understanding of the slow digitization of German administration.

According to the Online Access Act (OZG) passed in 2017, practically all basic administrative services should be accessible online by the end of 2022. Even after the deadline has passed, the digitalisation of public administration is still a long way from achieving this goal.

As a representative survey of 1,004 people in Germany aged 18 and over conducted by the digital association Bitkom has now revealed, a majority of citizens have little sympathy for the fact that a large number of administrative services are still not available digitally.

For example, 88% of those surveyed would like to see the digitalisation of administration in their city or municipality pursued more intensively. On the other hand, the majority are dissatisfied with the status quo: 86% of respondents state that public offices generally take too long to process their requests.

A large majority would therefore like to see better digital access to administrative services. The demand for digital family services is particularly high. For example, 91% of respondents stated that they would welcome a central registration portal for daycare centres and schools in their area. However, a majority (54% and 56% respectively) would also prefer to apply for child benefit and a birth certificate online.
