The study by the German Internet Industry Association looks at how the German government’s digital strategy is received by the population. To this end, 2,500 people aged 18 and over were surveyed between 24 and 25 August 2023.
One year after the presentation of the German government’s digital strategy, the majority of respondents (70%) see no recognisable progress in Germany’s digital transformation. The status of the digitalisation of public authorities and administration (63%), the expansion of digital infrastructure (53%) and cyber security (33%) were rated particularly critically. The clear majority of respondents (86%) believe that the current digital policy is not in line with the goals formulated in the coalition agreement to shape Germany as a pioneer in digitalisation.
A total of 82% also rate the area of future digital technology in Germany as below average in an international comparison. This is seen as a serious impairment of international competitiveness. Alexander Rabe, member of the Federal Government’s Digital Strategy Advisory Board, sees poor coordination and a diffusion of responsibility within the Federal Government as the main reasons for the lack of progress in the digital strategy.
