The majority of the population in Germany and selected other European countries state that the opportunities and risks associated with the use of AI are balanced. The other half of the population is divided in its assessment: for 22%, the risks of AI outweigh the opportunities, while for 23%, the opportunities outweigh the risks.
Furthermore considering the acceptance of AI by field of application, there are clear differences. The opportunity-risk assessment of AI and the perception of whether AI should be involved in decisions or not are predominant. For example, the opportunities of AI are predominantly perceived in the detection and treatment of diseases, and a large majority would like to see suggestions from AI. In contrast, when it comes to judgements and decisions in court proceedings, the risks are predominantly perceived and significantly fewer people would like to see AI suggestions.
