Five questions for Christoph Bornschein

Technical developments have an impact on society. What do experts think about digitalisation? What questions and challenges are they facing? And how do they leverage modern means of communication? Christoph Bornschein, member of the bidt Advisory Board, anwers these questions.

I deal with digitalisation…

… practically 24/7 and at all levels, as an observer and consultant, as a user and investor, occasionally worried and mostly optimistic. The technologies and transformation processes subsumed under this term have already fundamentally changed the world where I was born almost 40 years ago and make no bones about stopping.

My favourite apps are…

… the ones that help me navigate through the day and its challenges. Then the ones that connect me with the right and important people. Finally, the ones that offer distraction at opportune and important moments. In this order and varying forms, for example, calendars, Slack and Netflix.

One digital helper that I am still missing…

… this is probably a long overdue integrated booking system for train journeys within Europe and beyond, in terms of actuality, holiday season and climate crisis. But it will certainly be quite different in a few weeks after fatherhood begins.

A major achievement of digitalisation is…

… also one of its greatest challenges, namely the availability of fundamentally new solutions for fundamental issues, from public services and mobility to economic value creation and sustainability. Since complex, indispensable and often lucrative systems have been created over years and decades based on the old solutions, change remains a challenge.

My vision of a digital society…

… is still fundamentally optimistic and shaped by the conviction that technology strengthens people’s human capabilities and positively advances us as a society – despite all the setbacks and disruptive factors.
