More digital literacy for Europe in times of generative AI

How well is Europe prepared for generative AI and an increasingly digitalised society? What is the status of the digital skills of the European citizens? These questions are at the centre of the event in cooperation with the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU.

Digital skills and competences are becoming increasingly important: participation without digital participation is hardly conceivable anymore. With the Digital Decade, the European Commission has initiated a European policy flagship programme that aims to drive the digital transformation in Europe by 2030 with specific goals and targets.

This is a professional event with a selected audience. Participation is only possible after prior registration.

The Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed a comprehensive DigCompSAT self-assessment test to measure digital skills, which can be used on various platforms to assess one’s own digital skills. The bidt used this tool to gather representative data on the digital skills of the population in Germany and six other European countries. The results provide in-depth insights into the range of digital skills among the population in the countries surveyed, as well as findings on the digitalisation of the work environment and the perception of artificial intelligence. They also show where digital gaps exist and which social groups are particularly affected.

Moderated panel discussion and questions from the audience |

  • Martin Ulbrich (Policy Officer, Artificial Intelligence Policy Development and Coordination, DG Connect, European Commission)
  • Dr Riina Vuorikari (Member of the Advisory Board, ALL DIGITAL)
  • Prof Dr Alexander Pretschner (Chairman of the bidt Board of Directors, Professor of Software & Systems Engineering, TU Munich)
  • Dr Roland A. Stürz (Head of Think Tank, bidt)

Moderation: Katrin-Cécile Ziegler (digital economist, lecturer and tech journalist)

We would like to take this study as an opportunity to discuss with European experts: How can digital skills be strengthened across the population and thus reduce digital divides? Which skills will be particularly important in dealing with generative AI for shaping Europe’s digital decade in a way that is geared towards the common good?

Following the discussion, we cordially invite you to a get-together in Brussels.
