In her lecture at “vhs.wissen live” , the nationwide online format of adult education centres with high-calibre lectures from science, politics and society, bidt Director Ute Schmid explained how artificial intelligence is increasingly changing our everyday lives and our working world – whether in medical diagnostics, industrial production or in our private lives. However, trust in AI systems varies greatly, according to Schmid. On the one hand, she warned against overestimating the capabilities of AI without taking into account its susceptibility to errors, but on the other hand, she also considered complete mistrust of AI systems to be problematic. Instead, trust in AI systems should be calibrated appropriately. The ability to expertly categorise and evaluate AI outputs is crucial for such a differentiated assessment of AI results.
Without expertise in the relevant field of application and a basic understanding of how AI works, it is virtually impossible to assess the quality of AI outputs.

Expertise is therefore a key prerequisite for meaningful human-AI interaction. According to Schmid, it is crucial that people have sufficient knowledge in the respective field of application to evaluate AI outputs and make reliable decisions in complex situations.
AI as support – not as a solution
At the end of her presentation, the bidt Director emphasised the many opportunities offered by AI systems. Many problematic developments that can be observed in parallel are not due to the systems themselves, but to their unreflected use. Over-delegating tasks to AI would lead to a loss of quality awareness and willingness to make an effort in the long term. AI should serve as a tool that complements human skills and not replace them.
We need tools that help us maintain our problem-solving skills, our assessment skills and our sense of self-efficacy.
