The representative study examined pupils’ perspectives on the digitalisation of the school system. To this end, 504 pupils in Germany between the ages of 14 and 19 were surveyed by telephone.
The pupils are quite critical of the digitalisation of their respective schools. For example, 87% of pupils cited the lack of or poor Wi-Fi at their school as the biggest problem. They also criticised the lack of teachers (59%) and the school’s perceived lack of technical equipment (56%). Just over two thirds of pupils believe that the technical equipment at their school needs to be improved.
On the other hand, pupils generally rate the digital transformation at schools as positive. For example, 74% of them state that they are more motivated by the use of digital educational media such as learning platforms. 56% believe they could improve their school grades through the use of digital educational media. This contrasts with 13% who do not want to learn with digital educational media.
Teachers in particular have a key role to play in the digital transformation of schools. In most cases (74%), they have to deal with pupils’ IT issues, only 2% of pupils have access to external support and one in seven receive no technical support at all. Despite this, 78% of pupils perceive teachers to be open to digital devices and educational media.
