Digital Teaching Still Not Standard Practice

Insufficient digital equipment and lack of teacher skills hinder modern education.

In the 21st century, in addition to teaching traditional basic skills, the teaching of digital skills is essential for an adequate school education. First and foremost, this requires a modern digital infrastructure and sufficient digital skills among teachers.

In order to create a corresponding picture of digital school education in Germany, the D21 initiative conducted a representative survey of 2,353 parents of school-age children in connection with the eGovernment MONITOR 2022.

It is true that the coronavirus pandemic has also led to a considerable surge in digitalisation in schools. Nevertheless, the majority of parents surveyed were critical of the state of digital education in schools. Only 39% are of the opinion that their child is being taught the necessary digital skills at school.

The inadequate infrastructure and equipment in many places can be identified as a major obstacle to adequate digital education. For example, around 25% of pupils still do not learn with digital devices and only 62% of respondents state that their child has internet access at their school. In addition, 34% of respondents cited insufficient digital skills among teachers as a reason for the lack of digital education in schools.
