Digital Education at Schools: Parents See Great Importance

Digital skills are recognized by the majority of parents as crucial for their children's future, but they doubt that schools are providing them.

The study by the Vodafone Foundation Germany analyses the attitudes of parents towards digital education in schools in Germany and Europe. To this end, 1,000 parents of school-age children were surveyed in each of ten European countries.

At 86%, a large majority of parents in Germany believe that digital skills should be a central learning objective at schools, while 79% consider digital skills to be very important for their children’s professional future. The study also found that 89% of parents in Germany believe that digital technologies should be used throughout the school curriculum.

Looking at the school’s equipment, 57% of parents in Germany rated this as good. In the other European countries, the situation at the respective school is rated slightly better, as is the performance of schools in terms of successfully teaching skills such as resilience, empathy and creative problem-solving. They also see more potential in digital technologies than parents in Germany.

For the future, respondents expect more support for teachers in particular, for example in the form of further training on the use of digital tools in the classroom. In addition, 69% are in favour of Europe-wide uniform standards for the use of digital technologies in schools.
