Since 2021, the Network of Institutes for Digitalisation Research (NIfD) has brought together leading institutions in Germany that conduct interdisciplinary research into the social, political and technological consequences of the digital transformation. The members of the network are the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG), the Bavarian Research Institute for Digital Transformation (bidt), the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS), the Hans Bredow Institute (HBI), the Weizenbaum Institute and the Centre for Responsible Digitalisation (ZEVEDI). The network strengthens cooperation, knowledge exchange and joint initiatives in order to make digitalisation research in Germany visible and effective.

The network discussed the joint paper “Current attacks on freedom in digital communication spaces” with Minister Wildberger. The analysis shows the new challenges for a democratic public sphere posed by disinformation, propaganda and the use of generative AI. Another topic of the exchange was the data-based modernisation of the state and administration. The institutes presented research findings that contribute to the better organisation of administrative processes.

Scientific findings are indispensable for securing democracy, innovation and social cohesion in the digital age. Institutes for digitalisation research make a key contribution to ensuring that the digital transformation in Germany is carried out efficiently.
