Julian Nida-Rümelin is a member of the bidt board of directors. He studied philosophy, physics, mathematics and political science and is a professor emeritus of philosophy and political theory at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. His academic focus is on rationality theory, political philosophy and ethics. In 2018, Piper published his Plea for a Digital Humanism, written with Nathalie Weidenfeld, and in 2020 his opus magnum, A Theory of Practical Reason. He was Minister of State for Culture in the first Schröder cabinet, cultural advisor of the City of Munich and president of the Society for Analytic Philosophy and the German Society for Philosophy. He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. He has been an honorary professor at Humboldt University since 2001. In 2014, the University of Trieste awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2016 he was awarded the Europe Medal of the Bavarian State Government; in 2019, he received the Bavarian Order of Merit.
