The Methodological Potential of LLMs for Social Science Research

QPD Module 2: Basic Segment

Large Language Models (LLMs) have attracted considerable attention due to their powerful and versatile capabilities across a wide range of fields. But what opportunities do they present for the research process? This one-day workshop invites participants to learn more about the methodological potential of LLMs, with a particular focus on applications in the social sciences. We will examine various stages of the research cycle, including data collection and preprocessing, as well as qualitative and quantitative analysis of textual data. In addition to discussing the opportunities offered by LLMs, we will also critically address challenges such as biases inherent to the models and other limitations. The workshop is suitable for participants both with and without prior experience using LLMs, combining theoretical inout with hands-on practical activities.

Date: January 29, 2026

Time: 09:00-17:00

Workshop lead: Dr. Julia Romberg

Julia Romberg is a postdoctoral researcher in Computational Social Science at GESIS. A computer scientist by training, her research focuses on developing language technologies that better reflect society as a whole by examining biases in existing models and building machine learning systems that account for the diversity of human perceptions of subjective constructs. Her primary field of application is the study of argumentation in the political domain, as well as the support of public participation and deliberation processes through NLP methods.
