Brief description of the doctoral project
The way people sang in the so-called Middle Ages has a profound influence on our musical culture today. Through the development of a culture of notation, we also have one of the earliest major traditions of melodies. As part of my dissertation, I want to trace historical, cultural and musical processes with the help of digital technologies. Interdisciplinarity is one of the prerequisites for this: There is no lack of methods that have been developed for decades in subjects such as linguistics or bioinformatics, just a lack of a meaningful application of them. The combination of existing musicological work, which is often based on individual observations, and the possibilities of digital analysis gives rise to new questions in my work, which should make a valuable contribution to research into medieval music culture.
