Human-AI Collaboration in the Age of Artificial Intelligence Agents: Transforming Professional Role Identity in Organizations

AI agents are no longer passive tools as they act, learn, and make decisions alongside humans. But what happens to professional identity when AI becomes an active part of how work is defined? This dissertation investigates how Human-AI Collaboration with AI agents reshapes employees’ Professional Role Identity (PRI) and how existing identities may in turn shape AI adoption and use. Following a mixed-methods approach, the project traces how professionals defend, adapt, or redefine themselves in response to AI agents. The goal is to develop practical frameworks for identity-conscious AI integration in organizations.
