Research for the Public
The working group “Research for the Public” deals with the opportunities and challenges of digital science communication. Digital transformation is enabling scientists to engage more directly with the public, for example via social media, podcasts and other online formats. This opens up new opportunities for visibility and social exchange, but also entails risks – especially when it comes to controversial topics, where researchers may be increasingly exposed to digital criticism, attacks or so-called “firestorms”.
In the working group, we develop recommendations for young scientists to help them navigate this area of tension. We examine how scientific visibility can be built up in the public sphere and how researchers can deal responsibly with public attention. The aim of the working group is to provide practical guidance for reflective and resilient science communication in the digital age.
