Brief description of my doctoral project
My interdisciplinary PhD project is located on the intersection of computer science and geography. By analyzing historic Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), peering, and traceroute data, I assess the impact of physical and logical Internet infrastructure on networks and interconnection. I want to understand the role that geopolitical tensions, economic interests, and actor strategies play in routing, and which vulnerabilities, risks and dependencies emerge from this digital ecosystem. With this knowledge, I aim to propose a threat model that identifies, analyzes, and mitigates threats towards reliable, fast and private Internet connectivity. A particular focus of my project is EllaLink, the first submarine Internet cable directly connecting South America and Europe.
