Digital technologies and their characteristics have changed the nature of innovation. Digital innovation is a complex phenomenon, requires new structures and capabilities, and thus profoundly changes the value creation of organizations.

Established companies often find it difficult to develop and implement digital innovations in their established processes. I therefore address the key question: How do companies manage digital innovation?

One focus is the investigation of digital innovation units and their collaboration with the core organization. There are now over 300 of these units in Germany. However, they are a recent phenomenon for practice and research. Addressing the discipline of business informatics and companies in digital transformation, I derive implications for managing digital innovation for long-term competitiveness.
