Digital Psychology

Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU)

University education in psychology, medical technology and computer science currently focuses on teaching basic methods and knowledge with little involvement of other disciplines. Increasing digitalisation and the ever faster spread of digital technologies, such as wearable sensors, smartphone apps and artificial intelligence, also in the healthcare sector, offer a wide range of opportunities to address psychological issues from new and interdisciplinary perspectives. However, this requires close co-operation between the specialist disciplines of psychology and technical disciplines such as medical technology and computer science in order to facilitate the necessary transfer of knowledge. In these disciplines in particular, there is a considerable need to expand innovative and interdisciplinary teaching concepts and research projects that teach the appropriate use of digital technologies and research the application of these technologies to relevant issues in order to enable better care in the treatment of people with mental disorders. The overarching aim of the planned digitalisation college is to utilise and bring together the individual strengths of all participating disciplines, which are underrepresented in each other’s specialist areas.
